Stories online can build writing reputations by Rob Hopcott

Publishing stories online has always been a way for me to focus on my writing rather than focusing on how to get my writing published. To me, this is a huge advantage.

Once I have written a flash fiction story, a short story or an online novel or novella, I know it will be published almost immediately and it has been a great satisfaction over the years knowing that it will be read by at least a few people.

Some readers even leave kind comments these days, now I am publishing my stories in blogs which allow commenting, and it’s always great to get feedback from readers.

When I imagine what it would be like if I couldn’t publish my stories online with stories languishing on a shelf somewhere or being repeatedly rejected by conventional publishers, I thank my lucky stars that I have had the advantage of writing during the Internet age.

Some people criticise me for my free stories online approach but, for me, it’s all about building reputation. Unless people read my short stories, flash fiction and online novels, I can’t win a reputation for being a good writer. Unless I have a reputation for being a good writer, publishers won’t be interested in publishing my stories. Publishing my stories online free to read allows me the chance to build my story-writing reputation like no other strategy can.

If my collection of stories online is really good, perhaps one day fame will come knocking and then you can be sure so will the conventional publishers.

Well, I can dream :-)

Bye for now

Rob
